Mandera County launches school feeding programme, builds 66 classrooms

The initiatives are part of an ambitious programme to provide food and classrooms at all schools in the county.

To improve education standards, Mandera has launched a county-wide programme to feed students and provide furniture for those at the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) stage.

This initiative by the ECDE department is based on the recommendations of the education task force report, which highlighted the need to enhance service delivery in the education sector.

As part of the 2023–24 financial year, the Ministry of Education has so far constructed 66 new classrooms throughout the county, helping to create a more suitable learning environment.

At the launch of the project at Banisa Primary School on Friday evening, Education and Human Capital Development executive Bashir Ibrahim Alio urged residents to enrol their children in schools across the county.

Bashir reported that the number of ECDE learners had increased from 23,499 in 2021 to 32,300 as of November 2024.

"The county is now overseeing all education matters, so please bring your children to school," he said.

The ministry has also allocated resources for teaching aids, play materials, and quality infrastructure as part of transformative strategies for ECDE services.

Banisa MCA Issack Dahir thanked the county government for the programme and also urged parents to take their children to school. The parents said they were grateful that some of their burdens, in educating their children, had been lifted.
